Common Types of Koi Fish Diseases

Koi fish are just like an ordinary human being. Like us Koi fish too can get affected with several types of sickness. Most of these diseases are caused by foreign organisms that are drawn into the Koi fish pond. There are also some foreign organisms that can cause severe harm (can sometimes cause death) to the Koi fish. Once the water in the fish pond or glass tank is polluted or if the Koi fish is not fed properly, it is most likely that the Koi fish will become the victim of a Koi fish disease. If ever your Koi fish gets caught up with a disease, seek professional help or advice right away. Also, it is best that you do your own little research on how to treat the basic diseases that a Koi fish may catch.

Enumerating the Common Koi Fish DiseasesGenerally, the wellbeing of the Koi fish depends on its living environment. As a Koi fish owner, you must provide the basic needs and proper care of your Koi fish. Naturally, Koi fish have high resistance against diseases and does not immediately yield to any sort of disease. However, there are several exceptions to that. If the Koi fish is exposed to several harmful factors such as polluted living environment, lack of nutrients, or extreme exposure to some stressful conditions, the Koi fish immune system can or will break down. Just like most of us, stress subjects the Koi fish to sickness.

Several disease-causing organisms may and can exist in the living environment of the Koi fish. These organisms have become a main problem to all Koi fish owners. But then again, it can be noted that these stressful agents can be removed by providing the Koi fish with a healthy and clean habitat. These diseases can be prevented by simply giving the Koi fish the proper care it requires. Furthermore, prevention is always better and a lot cheaper than curing the disease. The most common type Koi fish diseases are the Dropsy disease, white spot disease, fish lice, fish ulcer, and anchor worms.

The most common stress-causing cause of these diseases include low dissolved oxygen level, high level of ammonia in the water, poor water quality, improper moving or handling, overcrowding of the habitat, the presence of parasites and other toxic chemicals (e.g. weed spray, oak blossoms, chloramines, etc.), malnutrition, too low or too high water temperature, and sharp edges that may or do exist within the pond or glass tank.

The Koi fish disease agents are bacteria, virus, fungi, and parasites. The most common disease causing agents are the vibrio, flexibacter columnaris, pseudomonas, and the aeromonas. Treatment involves the employment of nitrofurans, acriflavin, kanamycin, oxytetracycline, sulfanomides, chloramphenicol, and salt. These treatments are either injected directly into the Koi fish, or diluted into the water, or through feeding. Fungal infections are treated by way of iodine, acriflavin, malachite green, salt, methyline blue, and formalin in the forms of topical, bath, or by simply diluting the cure into the water.

On the other hand, most of the Koi fish can and may carry with them parasites like the lernaea or anchor worm, ich, argulus or fish lice, monogenetic flukes, trichophyra, and other types of internal parasites. The presence of these parasites within the Koi fish can result problems. Younger Koi fish are most susceptible to the infections caused by these agents. Treatment may involve the use of demilin, dylox, formalin, masoten, potassium permanganate, malachite green, or salt diluted into the Koi’s habitat or utilized in the bath.

Diagnosing the Koi fish disease is difficult. The same goes with their treatment. They are not like humans that can easily tell their owners from what they are suffering from. As a Koi fish owner, you must be aware about the behavior of your Koi fish. You’ll never know, they may already be afflicted with Koi fish diseases.
